Get in the Christmas mood with this little advent calendar🎄

Ho ho ho! 🎅 Do you need a quick treat or break for your students? Take a look at this calendar template we’ve put together for you. The template we’ve made can be found at the bottom of the article.

We have thrown together a small game consisting of the Advent Calendar (H5P).

How it works

The content-type works just like a regular advent calendar with doors that the students can open for each day. Using this cozy little content type, you’ll be able to create a variation of small daily breaks using text, images, links, audio, and video.

Note that you can only choose one type of content per door or day.

Behind each door you can choose content based on audio, image, link, text or video.

Some things to be aware of

We have enabled “Design mode” for the “template” within the behavioral settings. This allows the opening of all doors at all times. If this box is unticked, the doors will only open on the respective day or later.

If you plan to run this game in the plenum for your students, we recommend using the “Design mode” as it gives you the freedom to open doors in advance before Christmas break.

If you enable “Design mode” all doors can be opened whenever you want.

Tip 1 – don’t worry, you have time

Remember that you don’t have to have a finished calendar before the 1st of December. You can, at all times, edit the resource and add content behind the doors, which gives you a bit more time to finish it in time.

Tip 2 – save time with the standard background

If you wish to use a different background for the calendar, note that the doors do not have opacity, meaning you’ll have to do some extensive work in a photo editor to create the front and back to each entry and make them fit. If not, you’ll end up with doors that do not match the background as they’ll get random colors, messing up the whole background image.

Get to know the points system in Gamilab!

For all game types the default value for each node (step or stop) is 100 points. Beyond that, the points system works a little differently in the different game types. Here we explain how.

The Bike Race game

The points given during the Bike Race that are displayed on the screen, does only count for the cyclist’s energy level. Let’s for the sake of education call this value kiloJoule (kJ). These “energy points” will not be summarized and displayed anywhere besides as a factor influencing the time of the race.

The energy points you get when answering correctly are linearly calculated from the time you use to respond correctly.

Here are some examples:

  • If you answer within less than 1 second, it gives you an energy boost of 38.
  • If you answer within less than 5 seconds, it gives you an energy boost of 33.
  • If you answer within less than 10 seconds, it gives you an energy boost of 27.

For the math and physics teachers and geeks out there, this is the formula used to calculate energy:

Energy (kJ) = ((30 - t)/30+0.1)*35

In addition to the energy points, each correct “question stop” will be rewarded with 100 points for correct answers. You can find an overview of this amongst the results you have access to as the owner of a game. Maximum score is 800 points regardless of how many questions you add to the 8 stops along the track.

The King of the Mountain game

For the King of the Mountain game the score will always be 100 points for each flag the climber gets past. When a climber reaches the top of the mountain, he will therefore always have 700 out of 700 points as he can’t pass a flag and proceed without answering correctly. 

These points does currently not count for anything, as it is a time based game with a high score list based on time. You can find an overview of this amongst the results you have access to as the owner of a game.

The Explore game

For Explore games you can manually set what every node is worth, and thus overwrite the default value of 100 points per node.

Follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Game board.
  2. Edit an existing node by clicking on it.
  1. Expand “Settings” in the preview modal.
  1. Set the desired value for each node.

Make a note that you within the settings of the preview modal also can set the difficulty on each node.

  1. Click the path between the nodes to set “How many percent correct is needed on the last task to open this path”. Default is 90 %.
  1. This criteria decides how hard it should be to complete a game with score giving tasks.

Bonus in Gamilab

All of us enjoy getting a bonus, and we’ve made sure this is also possible within the games. Gamilab is all about learning, and introducing bonus in Gamilab gives the our learners a double bonus – the points they earn and learning something in the process. When a player get encounter a step with bonus, the will either be answering a question made by other players or make a question them selves.

You’re in control!

The creator of the game decides whether the game should be with or without a bonus. Look for the bonus icon in the menu when editing a “explore” game board.

When you click on “Bonus”, a dialog will appear where you can enable the bonus in the game board, you can choose whether the questions the students have created will automatically be available to other players and how difficult it should be to get a bonus. So you are in full control. Even if you choose to have the questions automatically added to the game, you can both view and evaluate the questions. The players can even let you know if any questions are wrong. You also decide whether it should be easy, medium or difficult to get a bonus.

How does bonus work?

If the players do well enough on tasks or spend enough time on activities that do not give points, there will be a chance that they will have the opportunity to ask questions or answer questions made by others. The rules for whether they get a bonus depend on the choice you have made on how difficult it will be to get a bonus, exact rules students must find out by playing. Whether players are allowed to ask questions or answer questions depends on how many questions they have made, how many questions others have made that they have not answered and a bit of coincidence.

You who make games decide whether the questions must be approved automatically in order to be used or whether you have to approve them. If the questions are automatically approved, players who are to answer them can report them as bad or inappropriate, then you have to decide whether the question should be used or deleted.

Under “My games” there will be an icon on the playing cards that shows whether there are questions that have been reported or not assessed.

The red icon with the exclamation mark shows that there are reported questions and the green icon with the check symbol indicates unassessed questions. If you delete a question, the person who made it will lose the bonus points they received for creating the question and if you press like, there will be more bonus points.

Bonus points

In addition to the players getting a better learning by having to think through and understand the topic in order to create suitably difficult questions, there will be more opportunities to use bonus points. When a player makes a question, the player will get points and if the owner plays likes the question, it will give more points, if the player does not press like, it is still possible to get extra points if a suitably large percentage answers correctly. If the player loses the question, the player loses these points. Of course, correct answers to questions made by others also give bonus points.

As if the extra learning is not enough reward to get the bonus, we will come up with several things the bonus points can be used for. Stay tuned for future releases to see what.
